Driving with the wrong fuel can cause damage to your engine. It is important to get the contaminated fuel drained as soon as possible to minimize the risk of costly damage. The more contaminated fuel that goes into the system, the more expensive it can be to repair your car. In most cases it is not going to cause instant damage, but the fuel will need to be removed as soon as possible, most new vehicles can detect that the fuel isn't right and will shut down to protect the engine.
Some insurances will cover the cost of the misfuel but you will need to double check with your provider, you will more than likely have to cover the cost initially and claim it back from your insurance if they provide the cover. You may however choose to cover the costs yourself to avoid an increase in your insurance premiums.
The amount of wrong fuel that your vehicle can safely tolerate depends on the vehicle’s manufacturer. Please check with your vehicle’s manufacturer for confirmation. Generally manufacturers recommend that the contaminated fuel is drained from the tank and replaced with clean fuel before the ignition is switched on or started.
However this is most likely to be around a 5% tolerance i.e if your vehicle has a 50 litre fuel tank you could have around 2.5 litre's of the wrong fuel to 47.5 litre's of the correct fuel. This is not an exact science and could still have an effect on your vehicles fuel system. I would always recommend anything over 1 litre needs to be removed.
This also relates to mixed fuels. If this is water or Adblue then the tolerances are very different. Any amount of this would need to be removed as this will cause significant damage to the fuel system especially diesel.
Please contact the hire company. Your rental agreement should stipulate that you contact the company if you experience a mechanical problem with the car. The hire company will usually arrange for the car to be repaired with a fuel drain company they have a contract with. They may agree for you to arrange the fuel drain yourself. If that is the case please contact one of our operators.
It doesn't matter what you are driving, we can drain the wrong fuel from any type of vehicle. You'll be surprised at the vehicles we attend, ranging from small cars to ambulances, trikes to performance motorbikes - even tractors and lorries, busses, boats, yachts. if it has a fuel tank we can drain it.
The fuel is drained into an Approved Tank fitted in the rear of our THE FUEL DRAINER vehicles. At the end of each working day (or sooner if needed) that tank is emptied into one of our Registered and Licensed Storage Facilities. Once there is a suitable quantity of contaminated fuel stored it is collected by a Fully Licensed Waste Carrier and it is recycled.
